帮助 / 帮忙 bāngzhù vs bāngmáng — both mean “help,” but behave differently. Learn the rule, then tap the right word in 20 sentences.

The rule

帮助bāngzhù  — transitive verb AND noun

Takes a direct object: 帮助我 / 帮助学生提高成绩. Also works as a noun: 谢谢你的帮助, 对我很有帮助, 寻求帮助. Tends to be bigger, more abstract, more formal.

帮忙bāngmáng  — separable verb 帮 + 忙 (离合词)

CANNOT take an object directly — ✗帮忙我. It stands alone (你能来帮忙吗?), splits apart (帮我一个忙 · 帮了大忙 · 帮不上忙), or sits before a verb for a casual favour (帮忙看一下). Concrete, colloquial, small favours.

Golden rule: need to name who/what you help right after the word? → 帮助.  A standalone favour, or 帮(某人)(的)忙? → 帮忙.  ✗帮忙我 is always wrong — use 帮助我 or 帮我的忙.
