The rule
Points at what something is like on the inside: its nature, model, pattern or defining traits. Use it for personalities, styles, genres, models, and “problems of this kind.” e.g. 性格类型, 血型, 电影类型, 这种类型的人.
Points at a labelled slot in an organised system — the bin you sort things into. Use it for cataloguing, filing, forms, product categories, official or scientific divisions. More formal. e.g. 按类别归档, 商品类别, 收入类别.
Quick test: can you swap in “kind / model / pattern”? → 类型. Can you swap in “a category to sort into”? → 类别. Filing and forms are always 类别; personality and style are always 类型.
